FAQ

1. Are the EPDM Membranes Guaranteed?
The 20 year EPDM guarantee is available only to all certified installers that have attended our training courses.
2. Can EPDM sheets be joined?
Yes. all of our EPDM membranes can be joined where the roof size is bigger than the largest membrane size or where it would be easier to install the membrane in some smaller sections.
3. Can I install EPDM under a shallow pitched tile roof?
Yes. You can install EPDM under a pitched tiled roof. This may even be necessary on some shallow pitched roofs to prevent any leaks.
4. Can I walk on my new roof?
To a certain extent, yes you can. EPDM is designed to take some LIGHT foot traffic during installation and during occasional cleaning/ maintenance. If you do require more use than this (for a balcony) then there are some additional materials that can be laid on top of your EPDM for more durable solutions.
5. Do I need any special tools?
Typically, you’ll need a standard 9″ roller set, mini roller and brush for applying adhesives and primers. A Seam Roller is a useful tool for tapes and joins. The RESITRIX system will require a heat gun for joins.
6. Does it have to be dry for EPDM to be laid?
es. EPDM Membranes require the substrate to be dry prior to the installation process. This is to ensure adhesive & primers can effectively bond the rubber to the roof deck. EPDM products will not adhere to any wet or damp surfaces. Trapped moisture may vaporize and affect the membranes performance.
7. I have incorrect roof tiles for the roof pitch.
If the pitch of your roof is too shallow for roof tiles then installing an EPDM rubber membrane would be an excellent solution to this problem.
8. How thick is the membrane?
ClassicBond and ShedCover = 1.2mm or 1.5mm DuoPly = 2.54mmRESITRIX = 2.5mm ElastaThane = 1.2mm in one coat.
9. Is ClassicBond EPDM BBA Certified?
Yes. ClassicBond membrane holds the British Board of Agrément certificate. No. 11/4853. In addition, it holds fire ratings for each of the thicknesses available.
10. Is ClassicBond membrane available in any different colours?
No. ClassicBond EPDM membrane is only available in one colour, a slate grey colour.
11. Is there a right way up when installing ClassicBond EPDM membranes?
Classicbond EPDM membranes are identical on both sides. This means there is no right or wrong side when you are installing it. However, you may sometimes find some small amount of printed writing on one side of the Rubber Membrane. This may be wise to keep this side down.
12.What is the difference between ClassicBond and Firestone EPDM?
ClassicBond® EPDM is CE marked with a nominal thickness of 1.2mm. In contrast to the thinner 1.1mm of Firestone RubberCover as defined by EN 13956.
13.What is the biggest EPDM sized sheet I can buy?
All sheets can be joined where the roof size is bigger than the maximum sheet size: ClassicBond & Shedcover 1.2mm – 15.25m x 30.5m (50ft x 100ft) ClassicBond & Shedcover 1.5mm – 15.25m x 15.25m (50ft x 50ft) DuoPly 2.54mm – 1.52m x 12.20m (5ft x 40ft) RESITRIX 2.50mm – 1M x 10M (3ft 4″ x 32ft 10″).
14. How long has rubber been used for roofing?
The first commercial rubber roof was installed in 1965 in the US by Carlisle Syntec. It is now over 50 years old and still going very strong.
15.Why are there blisters and/ or bubbles on my EPDM rubber roof?
Whilst bubbles and/ or blisters on a once-piece EPDM roof can seem unsightly, they won’t cause the rubber membrane to fail. The bubbles of trapped air and/ or moisture can be caused by a variety of issues which are all avoidable if the roof design is correct and the membrane was correctly installed.
