About Moss Damage
All brand new roof tiles have a protective surface which allows rainwater to run from them.
Over time and due to weathering, this surface slowly degrades allowing the tiles to become porous.
Wintry weather helps this deterioration to continue as the wet tile continually freezes and thaws.
A profligate build-up of moss and algae readily occurs on the roof once the rooftile's topcoating has weathered away to such an extent that the root systems of mosses and lichens can take hold.
These mossy build-ups may look innocent but they can hinder the proper water run-off of the tile and allow water to spill over the side and run underneath.
In addition, they can dam the water up, causing it to backtrack or go sideways under the tiles.
The roofing felt beneath the tiles is oil-based and the continual introduction of water washing out the oil causes the felt to dry out and crack.
The tensile strength of roofing felt is basically a string webbing which quickly rots without the covering of the oil-based pitch.
A prime example can be found at the gutter level where the roofing felt drops into the guttering system
